Travelling to Nyksund, Norway
Late Winter 2012

March 15 - April 12, 2011

Nyksund is a tiny fishing-harbour nearly at the northwestern tip of Langøya (Vesterålen). Abandoned because of economical reasons int the 1070's young people fortunately rediscovered the spirit of this extraordinary location and so they started with the restauration of the old harbour. Now, it has become a picturesque place.

For my journey to Nyksund I  chose the "inlandsvägen", which  leeds through sparsely settled regions  and crosses almost all big rivers of Sweden. I couldn't know what the lakes and rivers would look like when passing them at the beinning of thaw. But I expected them to be interesting just at the edge of winter to spring.

I was sure to find ice and snow north of the polar circle in these months. But there was already daylight for 12 hours and even longer. So, winter-landscape presented its best side in sunshine.

During this journey magnificent sceneries made me often stop to take lots of photographs. That's why I have to devide my report in 2 parts, part 1 about Sweden and the detour to the Lofoten Islands and part 2 shows my photographs of the Vesterålen Islands and of Nyksund in particular.

  Travelling to Nyksund, Part 2

 Vesterålen and Nyksund

Vesterålen

Clear sky and snow clouds,
sunshine and darkness,
bright colours and pale grey,
the always changing light- and weather conditions was the most exciting during my stay on the Vesterålen Islands.

The westcoast of Langøya faces the open sea and from there come all the gusts and snowshowers wich hit the coastline with unbroken force.

Nykan  is a picturesque bay with a small sandy beach near Nykvåg on Langøya. Two striking rocks border the bay to the open sea in the west.

In summer it is a popular bathing beach. In April it is visited by sea birds, seals and occasionally by a photographer.

Holmvik Stua as well was actually closed. Despite this, I got there a hot cup of coffee and some information about the state of development in this fascinating outpost of cultural life.

The colours of the houses and the snow-covered landscape light up brightly.

But soon this magical sight is disturbed by a strong gust of wind which whirls up the snow. This is the harbinger of the next snowshower comming up from the open sea. (↓)
